Alexander Norman ALEXANDER, (Service Number 6946) was a 26-year-old fettler on the Northern Division of the NSWGR when he enlisted. He was born in Hurstville and had joined the NSWGR Permanent Way Branch in January 1913 as a ‘packer’, becoming a fettler later in the year between Werris Creek and Narrabri, and in 1914-15 working between Gosford and Broadmeadow. He enlisted in the AIF in Sydney in July 1916.
Embarked from Sydney in November 1916 and landed in England in January 1917, he was sent to France in September. Apart from a few days in hospital with conjunctivitis in January 1918, he appears to have had only a fortnight’s leave in England in March before he was killed in action on 17 April 1918. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. His elder brother Rupert, a ‘platelayer’, had in 1917 also been killed in action in France.
