Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Richard Arthur John and Maude Harriet Elizabeth Cockshell, of Paruna.

Lewis Walter Cockshell, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J . Cockshell, of Parana, died at the Royal Adelaide Hospital on December 14, 1943, after a lengthy illness. Lewis, aged 20 years, spent most of his life in the Paruna district. Enlisting in the AIF in  March 1942, he passed his 1st class driver's licence with a transport company. While at Alice Springs he became ill and was in Hospital there for five months. He was later transferred to the 105 AGH for further treatment over a period of four months. It was then hoped he was well on the road to recovery and he received his discharge from the Army in October. Unfortunately, however, after being home for a few weeks he again became very ill, and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. His fortitude and cheerfulness during his long illness endeared him to all who came in contact with him, and his passing is mourned by all who were privileged to know him. His remains were laid to rest in the Dudley Park cemetery, the coffin being draped with the Union Jack. Among the floral tributes were those from Paruna RSL Sub-branch and comrades at Alice Springs. Two brothers are serving with the AIF
