HOLLAND Laurence Corin MB BS

1911- 1987

Laurence Corin Holland was born on 2nd May 1911, in Malvern, SA. He was the elder son of William Corin Holland and Louisa Laughton, nee Hurst, of Prospect, SA. He had a younger brother George and a sister Lulu. He was educated at Prince Alfred College, where he did exceptionally well and came first in the State for Latin in the Leaving Examinations. He studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating MB BS in 1935. Holland married to Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Hollidge at St Matthew’s Church Marryatville, SA, on 24th February 1937. She was the daughter of David Henry Hollidge, and Alice Elizabeth, nee Goode of Westall Street, Hyde Park, SA. They were to have four sons and a daughter. Holland went into general practice in Snowtown SA.

Holland enlisted on 2nd February 1942, when he was living in Snowtown SA, and named his wife, Mary, as his next of kin.  He commenced full-time duty immediately and was assigned to 7 MD, NT, as an RMO, at the rank of captain.  He was evacuated to ACH, Woodside with an illness in August 1942, and then to 105 AMH for a tonsillectomy on 1st September 1942.  He returned to the Northern Territory LoC area, at Mataranka, in October 1942, and attached to 4 Advanced Reinforcement Depot (ARD). It appears that he stayed in this posting until 5th December 1943, when he was transferred to QLD L o C area, allotted to 3 ACH and subsequently to 7th FdAmb for a short time, in August 1944. He returned to 3 ACH until 11th December 1944, when he returned to SA for termination of his appointment on 21st December 1944 and placed on the Reserve of Officers.

Following the war, Holland was appointed registrar at the Mareeba Babies Hospital from 1946 to 1948. He was a member of the AMA and later had rooms on South Road, Black Forest, SA. Laurence Corin Holland died on 18 July 1987; his wife and children survived him.
