Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Edward was the eighth of twelve children of William John McCredden (b1863 in Terang, Victoria) and Margaret Ann Wylie (b1858 in Monkey Gully, Linton, Victoria). William - a Farmer - and Margaret married in 1886 in St Arnaud, Wimmera, Victoria. They settled at Reedy Dam near Beulah, Victoria where they raised their family. Nine sons volunteered for service in WWI and five enlisted - three sons - John, Albert and Ernest were KiA.

Edward was a Labourer at Beulah, Victoria when he enlisted in the AIF in June 1915 - Private (Service No:2626) with 4th Reinforcements 8th Infantry Battalion. Edward did not embark with the Battalion (overstrength) and in October that year re-enlisted with 8th Light Horse Regiment (Gunner; Service No:1425), embarking for Egypt in November 1915. Edward was in Belgium in August 1917 when he Transferred to 12th Field Artillery Bridgade and in 1918 applied for a compassionate Discharge - stating that his mother was 'prostrate with grief' following the deaths of three sons KiA. Edward returned to Australia in September 1918 and was Discharged in December.

Following his Discharge, Edward settled in Bendigo wher he was a Fruiterer with his brother Arthur. In 1921 Edward married Ellen Euphemia Anderson (b1899 in Dimboola, Victoria). Edward and Ellen lived in Birchip - where Edward was a Fruiterer and Confectioner - until the early 1940s when they moved to Melbourne. Edward was a Munitions Worker in the 1940s and later worked as a Clerk. Edward died in 1971 and Ellen in 1974.
