Son of John Edward FITZGERALD of 4 Pirie Street, Port Pirie South, SA. Educated at St Anthony's School at Solomontown he was fond of sport and played cricket, tennis, football and was a good swimmer. In civilian life he was a crane driver at Whyalla and enlisted in Australia. He was in Darwin during the first raid, and his Battalion has the credit of shooting down the first Japanese plane.
