John Hender was born in England and enlisted at Keswick on 5 July 1915. He embarked on 18 November 1915 with B Company 32nd Battalion and later served in France from June 1916. After receiving a severe gunshot wound to the abdomen on 19 July 1916, John was evacuated to England and was eventually returned home because of 'mitral disease of the heart' on 31 December 1916. After the war he resided in Willunga and McLaren Vale. He married Kathleen Veronica Toole in 1919 and died at Royston Park on 6 September 1959, aged 64 years.
