HUNWICK Donald Amias Jenner MRCS LRCP
1908-1985
Donald Amias Jenner Hunwick was born on 14th June 1908, at Port Lincoln, SA. He was the son of Henry Charles Moore Hunwick and Fanny Louisa, nee Crawley. He was educated at Prince Alfred College and initially studied medicine at the University of Adelaide. He travelled to England and qualified MRCS LRCP in London in 1931, this was followed by a resident year at Bristol General Hospital, UK. He returned to Australia and worked at the Adelaide Children's Hospital from 1933 until 1934. He then took a position at the Launceston General Hospital, Tasmania, in 1935. He married Beryl Lyda Lawson, 23rd October 1935, at the Methodist Church, Ross, Tasmania. Beryl also studied medicine at the University of Adelaide. She was the daughter of the Reverend Lawson, a Methodist minister, and Mrs E Lawson, a who at the time were living in Saddleworth, SA. Hunwick then left Tasmania and took up a position, in Port Lincoln Hospital, SA, and was also the Quarantine Officer at Port Lincoln, in 1937.
Hunwick enlisted at Wayville on 2nd February 1942. He gave his wife as his next of kin, and she was living at Port Lincoln at that time. He was posted temporarily as OC of 4 Fortress Coy at Largs Bay, SA. He transferred to 52 Camp Hospital, on 17th October 1942, before being posted to 3 Inf Trg Bn and later to 35 Camp Hospital, Warradale, SA. He had a number of attachments to units in South Australia. On 30th January 1943, he was permitted to undertake locum tenens for a doctor at Port Lincoln for three weeks. On 1st August 1943, he was granted leave without pay to return to his general practice in Port Lincoln. On 26th April 1944, his appointment was terminated, and he was transferred to the Reserve of Officers.
Hunwick moved to Victoria after World War 2, to continue his general practice. He and his wife had two children by 1944, Ann and Donald. Donald Amias Jenner Hunwick died in Victoria on 23rd July 1985 and is buried at Dromana Cemetery near Arthurs Seat, Victoria. His wife, who died about 2005, and children survived him.
