COOLING Max Sylvester MB BS FRACGP
1918-1981
Max Sylvester Cooling was born on 21st February 1918, in Adelaide, SA. His parents were Charles Maurice Cooling and Mary Philomena, nee Ryan. He was educated at Christian Brother's College, Wakefield Street, Adelaide and Lewisham, NSW. He studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating MB BS in 1944: he completed his resident year, as a resident medical officer, at the RAH, in 1944. He married Joan Audrey Peake, daughter of Mr and Mrs H F Peake of Springfield, SA, on 26th October 1944.
Cooling enlisted in the 2/AIF in Wayville, South Australia, on 16th July 1945. Before enlistment, he had served as a private in 6th FdAmb in the CMF. He was married at the time of his recruitment and named his wife as his next of kin. Cooling was posted to the Inter-Service Wing on 5th September 1945. He was transferred to 34 Camp Hospital on 29th November and subsequently to 64 Camp Hospital on 15th December. Cooling was attached as MO to Tatura POW Camp and then again posted to the Inter-Service Wing in 4 MD, on 28th August 1946. Cooling had many other short-term posting and attachments, including 105 AMH. He was granted 90 days study leave before discharge. He was discharged on 22nd May 1947 and transferred to the Reserve of Officers. He was placed on the Retired list on 21st February 1973.
Cooling was a committed general medical practitioner after the war. He lived on Fullarton Road, Highgate. He was secretary of the South Australian Faculty of the College of General Practitioners from 1966. Followed by Chairman and Provost from 1972 to 1973 and Chairman of the RACGP from 1972 to 1975. He continued to serve the College after that as Treasurer. He and his wife had one son and four daughters. His recreations were yachting and golf, and he was a member of the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron and of the Naval, Military and Air Force Club of SA. Max Sylvester Cooling died on 20th April 1981.
