HAINS Robert Myer MB BS
1917- 1983
Robert Myer Hains was born on 12th June 1917, in Broken Hill, NSW. He was the son of Dr George Myer Hains and Bertha Marcus, nee Mannheim. He was the youngest of four children with two sisters, Mary and Alice and brother, John. Hains was educated at Prince Alfred College, SA and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating MB BS in 1939. He completed his resident year at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Hains joined the CMF as an honorary captain in December 1940, commencing full-time duty on 30th December 1941, and enlisted in the 2/AIF the next day. He served as an RMO with the 2/AIF from 31st December 1941. He left for Alice Springs, NT on 12th March 1942 and was posted to 2/3rd FdAmb, Papua New Guinea in 1942; followed by postings to 2/28 Aust Inf Bn, and 11th FdAmb in 1943. Hains’ personal equipment, including his pay book, were destroyed in a fire in his regimental aid post (RAP), in November 1943. He was away from the RAP at the time. Hains was posted 6 Aust MG Bn, in January 1944, and 2/6th AGH in 1945. He was allotted to L of C NSW and took unpaid leave from May to June 1945. Returning to SA, he was posted to the Inter-services Medical Wing, 14th September 1945, and requested discharge on compassionate grounds. Hains was discharged on 31st October 1945, and placed on the reserve of officers.
Hains married Barbara Mary Douglas Bell on 29th September 1945, at Hawthorn, SA. Hains was appointed the Government Medical Officer for the Black Heath district, NSW in March 1951. He moved to South Australia and took up a practice on Henley Beach Road, Lockleys and lived in Walkerville Terrace, Gilberton. Robert Myer Hains died, on 30th December 1983, and is interred in Enfield Memorial Park SA. He was survived by his wife who died in 2010.
