Son of Mrs. STEPHENS of Port Pirie.  Married with four children, John and the family resided at 6 Louis Street Stepney, SA.  Educated at Port Pirie School he was fond of swimming and spent most of his spare time fishing.  In civilian life he worked at Cresco Fertilizers at Port Lincoln for ten years and enlisted in Port Lincoln in May 1941.  He trained at Wayville and in Victoria.
