Son of Mrs B BESANKO of 29 Goode Road, Port Pirie West. Educated at Freeling and Port Pirie Public Schools he took an interest in swimming. In civilian life he worked at the B.H.A. Smelters in Port Pirie. Enlisting in March 1941 he left Australian for the Middle East where he was injured by a land mine and returned to Australia in August 1942.
