His brother, Private George Blake, also fell. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 29 on September 10, 1917 whilst serving with the 28th Battalion, Australian Infantry, A.I.F. - Service No. 3043
Both were born in Collingwood, Yarra City, Victoria, Australia, the sons of of George and Maria Matilda Blake of 33 Cheetham Street, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
William had been a draper prior to enlistment in the Australian Imperial Force. William embarked from Fremantle for overseas aboard HMAT "Surada" (A52) on 17th February 1915
