Private Haniford served with the 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion in the Syrian campaign of June / July 1941
Landing at Java in early 1942 the majority of the Battalion became Prisoners of War following the Japanese landings there. Private Haniford worked on the Thai Burma Railway and was eventually liberated in September 1945
