Leonard Neville Bakewell was born in Malvern, Adelaide on the 18th of April 1916 to William Kenneth and Annie Ramsey Bakewell. He was educated at St Peter’s College before commencing a Commerce course at the University of Adelaide, residing at St Mark's College.
In 1939 Leonard enlisted into the Australian Militia, transferring to the A.I.F. in 1940. After reaching the rank of Captain, Leonard was killed in Egypt on the 17th of August, 1942 while serving with the 2nd/3rd Pioneer Battalion. He was 26 years old.
