Walter was married with eight children and resided at 35 Fourth Street, Brompton, SA. Educated at Brompton he played football for Excelsior Club for several seasons and was fond if fishing. In civilian life he worked at the brickyards in and around Brompton for many years and when he enlisted in June 1940 was employed at Walkerville Brewery. He left Australia in December 1940 and saw service in Tobruk and Syria.
