"Wife on murder charge
A 36-year-old mother of two children was charged in Adelaide Police Court today with having murdered her husband at McLaren Flat. She appeared in court nine hours after the body of Harold Edward Seymour Emms, 36, Carrier, of McLaren Flat, had been found buried in a vine yard 1½ miles from his home. Discovery of Emms's body followed police inquiries which began last night. Detectives Blyth and Canney, in charge of investigations, were told that at 9 a.m. yesterday Mrs. Emms telephoned her stepfather, Mounted Police Sergeant H. Ward, at Barmera, and asked him to come and bring her mother to McLaren Flat. Sergeant Ward arrived at Mrs. Emms's home at 7.36 p.m. yesterday.
Buried in sand
Emms's body was found in a vineyard about 1½ miles from the cottage in which he had lived with his wife and son, aged 13, and daughter, aged 3. The grave was about 9 in. deep. The body was buried in a sandy patch between rows of vines. A powerful man, Emms weighed about 14 st., and was about 5 ft. 11 in tall. Until 16 months ago, when he bought a truck, he worked in the McLaren Flat general store and post office. After the body had been un earthed, it was taken to the City Morgue, where a post mortem examination was made.
Shot through head
This disclosed Emms had been shot through the head. Death is believed to have occurred on Thursday night. Mrs. Emms, whose full name is Laura Elsa Emms, was escorted into Adelaide Police Court about 10 minutes before it opened this morning. Of slight build, she wore a blue print summer frock and three-quarter length cerise swagger coat. She was hatless, wore black court shoes, but no stockings. There was a short adjournment so she could obtain legal representation. Later she was remanded until Monday week.
