Son of Roger Arthur Thomas and Ruby Florence BATTYE, of Doughty Terrace, Mount Gambier, SA. Educated at Mount Gambier Schools he was interested in boxing, cycling and football and was a hairdresser in civilian life. He had won trophies for boxing. Enlisting in May 1940 he had 3 other brothers serving in the forces.
