Des's life
Des lived in the Goodwood Orphanage as a child, as his mother was unable to look after him, while she had to work. She was a housekeeper for the Marist Brothers in Alberton from 1936 to about 1948. His parents were thought to have been divorced as there was never any mention of his father whilst growing up.
When he had holidays he spent them with Mr & Mrs Broomhill. After he left the Orphanage he went to Bagots Well (near Crystal Brook) on a farm for about a year. He then returned to live with his mother (except for the war years) until she passed away in 1953.
Des was a member of the Rosewater Bowling club and the Rosewater branch of the R.S.L.
Des died aged 46 years and was laid to rest with his mother at Cheltenham Cemetery.
