Son of Mr and Mrs R.W. Todd, of Kangarilla, SA. Educated at Sturt Street (Adelaide) State School and the Thebarton Technical School he played a little soccer, but was very keen on fretwork and made many small ornaments. In civilian life he was a labourer at the Shriek Brush Company and enlisted in October 1939. Andrew left Australia in May 1940 for England and later transferred to the Middle East and was sent to firstly Palestine then on to Syria.
