Son of Mr and Mrs E.W. COOK of 46 Gladstone Road, Mile End, SA. Birt was educated at the Thebarton School and followed outdoor sports and played football in suburbs and hills district and then for Angaston in the 1939 season. Residing at 85 Sussex Street Lower North Adelaide, he worked at I.C.I. for several years in Dry Creek and Angaston and enlisted in October 1939. He was the first employee to enlist from I.C.I. and left Australia in May 1940 for England and after 6 months went to the Middle East and saw service in Tobruk.
