Died on this date – 7th January..... Private Harry Adams was born at St. Marys, New South Wales in 1891. His mother died in 1895 & his father died in 1897. Harry Adams enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 6th March, 1916 as a 24 year old Labourer from Bathurst, NSW.
Private Adams was reported as AWL (absent without leave) on 4th June, 1916 & fined 10/- & again from 23rd to 26th June, 1916 while posted at Kiama, NSW & fined £3.
Private Harry Adams embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 22nd August, 1916 with the 13th Infantry Battalion, 19th Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 13th October, 1916. He was posted to No. 3 Command Depot at Wool, Dorset on 13th October, 1916.
Private Adams was absent from 7.15 am to 12 noon on 1st November, 1916 & confined to Camp for 1 day.
Private Adams was transferred to 4th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire on 17th November, 1916. He was sent sick to Codford General Hospital, Wiltshire on 21st December, 1916 & admitted the same day with Pneumonia. Private Adams was transferred to No. 3 New Zealand Hospital at Codford with suspected C.S.M. (Cerebro Spinal Meningitis) on 21st December, 1916. He was transferred on 22nd December, 1916 to Salisbury Isolation Hospital, Wiltshire. The Hospital Admissions form recorded the following information: “The weather was too severe to send him to Salisbury last night. Extremely ill on admission. Semi comatose...”
Private Harry Adams died on 7th January, 1917 at Isolation Hospital, Salisbury, Wiltshire from Cerebro Spinal Meningitis. (Note: The Hospital Admissions form recorded that Private Adams died on 8th January, 1917. All other forms have the date of death as 7th January, 1917).
Private Harry Adams was buried on 10th January, 1917 in St Lawrence’s Churchyard, Stratford-sub-Castle, Wiltshire, England where 25 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
