ADCOCK, Albert Percival (1896 – 1917)

Albert Percival Adcock was born on the 26th of November in 1896 at Wayville, South Australia. Adcock was well educated at the public school in Hindmarsh. Albert’s occupation before the war was assistant cashier. He was a Baptist by religion. His home town was Croydon, South Australia where he lived with his mother Elizabeth Jane Adcock. On the 14th of February 1916 at the age of 19, Albert enlisted. Albert went to the war taking after his elder brother Lance Sergeant Ralf Edgar who returned to South Australia in 1919.

Albert embarked on the HMAT A60 Aeneas on the 11th of April 1916 to fight with the 50th battalion, 2nd Reinforcement. The 50th battalion was formed in Egypt and was a “pup” of the 10th Battalion. The 50th battalion was part of a major battle at Mouquet Farm, from the 13th to the 15th of August where they suffered heavy casualties.

Albert Percival Adcock was killed in action on the 2nd April 1917, two years after his enlistment. In early 1917 the 50th battalion followed the German retreat and attack at Noreuil on the day of Albert’s death. Albert was shot and killed in Noreuil. Albert’s place of burial is Noreuil Australian Cemetery (Special Memorial A, 1), France.
