From ‎Gary Mitchell‎ to Australia and New Zealand in WWI

I did not add a photo to my Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor post concerning Private William Henry Bowden SRN 3012, 36th Battalion, who fell on the 4th April 1918 at the 1st Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, age 29.

His name has been inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Also inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Methodist Church Roll of Honour and the Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor.

Born at Carrington (not Singleton), New South Wales on the 8th November 1888 to Moses (died 1940) and Mary Anne (died 1938) Bowden of 130 Young Street, Carrington, N.S.W. and Vulcan Street, Carrington, N.S.W. and 75 Scott Street, Carrington, N.S.W., he was a labourer living at the Oriental Hotel, Carrington, New South Wales and Gipps Street, Carrington, N.S.W., and was working at the Abermain Colliery when he enlisted November 1915 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Discharged-20.1.1916, medically unfit (hernia), he reenlisted-5.2.1917 with the 36th Battalion at the Show Ground Camp, Sydney, N.S.W.

Also known as Puss, William had a younger brother Stanley (Reg No-7024, born 1898 as Edward Stanley, died 1982, location unknown) who also served 1st A.I.F.

Another younger brother George Blake (Reg No-N87124, born 1892, died 1927. Married, deserted Milson Island Camp 11.5.1918) buried unmarked grave at the cemetery.

William’s parents are resting together at Sandgate Cemetery (METHODIST 4-08. 55.), and unfortunately there is no memorial inscription on either headstone to tell us of the loss of their son, and I am unable to place a memorial cross, so today I placed poppies in remembrance of William’s supreme sacrifice.
