Australian Flying Corps
Born in Parkes, NSW, in 1897, 1626 Air Mechanic Second Class Jack Edwin McKimm enlisted for service in the Flying Corps on 16 October 1916. He embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Marathon on 10 May 1917 and disembarked at Plymouth on 20 July. He marched into Australian Flying Corps Training Depot, Wendover on 28 July before marching out to the Wireless School at Blenheim Barracks on 22 August. McKimm proceeded overseas to France on 26 October and joined No. 1 Aircraft Depot on arrival in France on 27 October. He was attached to No. 69 (Aust) Squadron, Royal Flying Corps on 17 December, which was redesignated N. 3 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps on19 January 1918. He returned to England on 4 March 1919 where he took up Non Military Employment with AIF Headquarters and the AFC until returning to Australia aboard the Port Denison on 25 September 1919. McKimm served in the militia between the world wars and enlisted for service with the Second AIF on 14 May 1940. He was appointed Deputy Assistant Director of Postal Services the following day. In this capacity he travelled extensively between New Guinea, Queensland and New South Wales and also provided advice to the Navy on provision of Postal Services. He was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on 3 June 1946.
