Vernon, aged 23,  served with 15 Squadron RAF as a member of the Royal Australian Air Force~ Service Number 404393.

A partner in his father's plumbing business by trade, he was the son of Charles and Vera Akes of Rosewood, Queensland, Australia.

Sergeant Akes' name is located at panel 118 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
