William Fancourt Gifford ARMIT was born on 15th February, 1915 in Toorak, Victoria
His parents were William Duke ARMIT and Hester Christina MITCHELL - His Father was a retired Lieutenant Commander (Royal Naval Reserves) England, now retired & came from Dublin, Ireland - His mother Hester was born in St Kilda, Victoria
William enlisted on 18th December, 1941 in Royal Park, Victoria while he was living at Bindi Station via Swifts Creek - he embarked from Sydney on 10th January, 1942 for Singapore - he was with the 2/10 Ordnance Workshop
He was taken a Prisoner of War in Malaya on 16th February, 1942 and died of Illness on 4th October, 1943 in Burma -he is buried in Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Myanmar

ARMIT.- On October 4, 1943 in POW Camp, Burma, VX651868, William Fancourt Giffard, 2/10th Ordnance, elder son of H.C. and the late W. D. Armit, Bindi Station, East Gippsland aged 28 years.
