Private Avery enlisted in June 1941, and saw active service with the 2/23rd Battalion in the Middle East, whre he met his death on the 29th of October, 1942, at the critical but decisive battle of El Alamein. Though his life was short, it was marked by distinctions and achievements, especially in his school career, which stamp him as a splendid type of young Australian. In 1936 he was dux of his School and Captain of Wimmera House. In 1937, the School conferred on him the honour of the Head Prefectship. At the time of his enlistment, he was in the emply of Williams Motors, Nhill. The School and Ex-students tender to his parents their sympathy for the loss of so fine a lad.
