Plane was a Mitchell 41-12450 was seen to lose altitude over the target area when carrying out and operational bombing raid on the Lae Aerodrome on the 25 May 1942. No communication from the plane after the last sighting and it is believed the engines were put out of commission by enemy anti-aircraft fire. Following searches found no trace of Bailey.
It was suspected that some of they crew may have survived the 'landing' of the plane but it could not be established if the crew did survive or if they were taken prisoner as the Japanese did not release any records to that effect
