Biography contributed by David Meagher
Joe was the son of Harry and Mary Ellen Bartlett, and was my mother's much-loved cousin. He was killed in action on 7 July 1943 during an attack on Japanese positions on Bobdubi Ridge, age 20. Official reports state that we was killed by a mortar round, along with another battalion member, but my mother related to me that the family were told by a battalion member that 'cousin Joe' had been killed by a sniper during this battle. His death devastated his family, and his mother never recovered from the shock.
