Leighton was born as Leigh William Llewellyn BAYLISS on 22nd July, 1913 in Deniliquin, New South Wales

His parents were Phillip James BAYLISS & Evelyn Harriet LLEWELLYN who married in Deniliquin in 1908

Leighton married Joyce Culvenor PURTON in Victoria in 1939

He was living in Fairfield in Melbourne, Victoria when he enlisted with the Australian Army on 8th November, 1939

He died while defending the Island of Crete against the German land & airborne invasion on 20th September, 1941 - death was presumed - his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial and Phaleron War Cemetery Memorial in Athens, Greece & the Roll of Honour in Heidleberg, Victoria

His father Phillip James BAYLISS first served in the Boer War (SN2795) and then as a Lieutenant in WW1 and was discharged from duty in 1920

His brother Phillip Arthur BAYLISS served in WW2 (SN 377638) & (SN VX66675) & was discharged in 1945
