Roy was the third child of Frederick George Brown (born 1874 in Rosweood, QLD) and Sarah Jane Cwthray (born 1879 in Brisbane, QLD). Roy was 4 years of age when his mother died in 1910, and his father remarried in 1913 and had another son with his second wife Sarah Rosalie Haun (born 1873 in Karabbin, Ipswich, QLD).
Roy was working as a Labourer when he married Alice Mary Kelly (born 1903 in Warwick, QLD) in 1934 in Brisbane, QLD. Roy and Alice lived in Redland Bay, QLD where Roy ran a General Store for four years. He was unemployed and living with his father in Ipswich, QLD when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1941 in Brisbane, QLD. Roy was posted at Rathmines, Wagga, Archerfield, Amberley, Evans Head and Ascot Vale and served as a Leading Aircraftman and Corporal - Canteen Steward. In 1943 at Werribee he was charged with others of fraud, and during that year stopped allotments to wife Alice Mary, stating that he was applying for an annulment of the marriage. Alice Mary provided a written statent that she would not contest the separation. Roy then changed his Will and appointed Miss Theo Joan Rita Franklin as his Executrix and sole beneficiary.
On 7 April 1944, Roy died in 6 RAAF Hospital at Heidelberg in Victoria from injuries sustained in a 'railway incident' at Broadmeadows the previous day - he was found lying on the tracks. Following some dispute over Roy's effects, Miss Theo Franklin - who had been appointed Executrix and sole beneficiary - wrote stating thet she would not contest any claim Alice might make, apart from requesting the return of a studio portrait of herself.
Roy was given a miltary funeral and buried at the Springvale Cemetery
