Ronald was the third of four children of Alfred Richmond Campbell (born 1871 in Northumberland) and Isabella Jane Thompson (born 1875 in Cumberland, England). Richard was an Oil Merchant's Clerk in 1900 in Cumberland when he married Isabella, and the family moved to Edinburgh, Scotland where Alfred was a Commercial Traveller. By 1919 the family had immigrated and were living in Brisbane, QLD where Alfred was a Commercial Traveller. They later moved to Melbourne, Victoria.

Ronald worked in Sydney, NSW as an Advertising Writer for Lowe's, and for Louis Coen Wireless Pty Ltd in Melbourne .... he was a member of the militia for about ten years before the outbreak of the war, and obtained his commission in May 1932 (The Age, Melbourne Vic, 12 February 1942, p10). He was Sales Manager for Homecrafts Pty Ltd for nine years before the War, and married Elva Parker (born 1908 in Melbourne, Victoria) in 1926.

Ronald enlisted in the AIF in December 1939 and served as Captain (Service No:VX330) with 2/8th Infantry Battlion. He Died of Wounds in Libya on 23 January 1941. Brothers-in-Law Leslie William Parker (ACMF, Private, Service No:V353907), Harold Dean Parker (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:120822) and Alexander George White (Gunner, Service No:VX26804/Aircraftman 2, Service No:429754) also served in WWII.

Ronald is buried at Knightsbridge War Cemetery in Libya.
