Corporal Henry Edward Conway (Service No:43081) enlisted in the RAAF on 12 June 1941 as a Trainee/Aircraftman 1 (mustered as a Trainee Fitter, later as Fitter Armourer). Corporal Conway served with No 4 Squadron in Berri, New Guinea and on 27 August 1943 was a crew member of Douglas Aircraft No 441, returning to Base loaded with bombs and ammunition. The aircraft lost height shortly after take off near Wau and crashed. it was located by a patrol, badly burned and 'amongst the wreckage was found the dismembered and burned bodies of the occupants none of which was recognisable' (National Archives Australia: Confirmatory Memorandum).
The second child of Henry Edward Conway Snr (b1898 at Goodna, QLD) and Dora Gertrude Cohen (b1898 on Thursday Island, QLD). Henry Snr (a Mechanic on Thursday Island in 1919) and Dora married in Brisbane in 1920 and lived at Nudgee in Brisbane, Gracemere in Rockhampton, Dalby, Shorncliffe and Brisbane where Henry Snr was a Mechanic, Radio Technician and Supervising Technician.
Henry had worked in Dalby QLD as a Tool Maker for eighteen months before enlisting in the RAAF in 1941.
