Son of Ralph Edwin and Beatrice Mary (nee Curgenven) De Garis of Millicent, SA; brother of Renfrey Curgenven De Garis who served with the RAAF, Laverton with the rank of Sergeant from 1941 1947. His father Ralph served in the 9 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps from 1942-1945
