Husband of Caroline ESTALL, 'Lingard' Starling Street, Leichhardt, NSW

In the Great War William served in France and was wounded at Menin Road 23 September 1917 and invalided to Lady Murray's British Red Cross Hospital.  He rejoined his unit in December 1917 and was gassed in March 1918 and invalided to No. 35 General Hospital Havre.  He rejoined his unit in May 1918.

He died on 4th July 1942 as a result of an accident.

Lt. Colonel W. J. Estall, who was accidentally killed in an automobile accident on Sunday at Brisbane, was at one time stationed at Port Kembla with the 13th Garrison. He served  in the Great War and was held in high regard by his men and all who came in contact with him. He was aged 52 years and is survived by his widow and a family of three.

Killed in a motor accident in the country during the weekend, Lieut-Colonel W.J. Estall (52), commanding officer of the 13th Australian Garrison Battalion, will be cremated with full military honours this afternoon at the Wornonora Cemetery, Sutherland. 

Known throughout the Army as 'Old Bill', Lieut-col. Estall was one of the most popular and highly respected officers in the N.S.W. Lines of Communication Area.  Headed by a miltary band, the funeral leaves St. Paul's Church of England, Princes Highway, Kograrh, at 1.15 pm.

The coffin will be borne on a gun carrage, escorted by 60 troops and a firing party.  Another 200 troops from various units to which Lieut-Col. Estall was attached during his career will take part in the ceremony at the Crematorium.
