Flight Sergeant Edward Charles Fitzgerald, or Ted as he was known, was the only son of Thomas and Rose Fitzgerald.
He had a sister, Mona. Their mother died when Ted was three and, after his father moved to the Eastern States, they were brought up by their grandmother.
They had an apartment in St George’s Terrace and he was educated at Christian Brothers College which was just across the road.
Prior to his enlistment in Perth in January 1943, he served ten months in the air training corps.
Ted did his initial training in Perth then in New South Wales, where after fourteen years, he met up with his father.
He embarked in Sydney in November 1943 and travelled to England via the USA arriving there in December.
He trained as wireless operator air gunner and in February 1944 was posted to 21 Operational Training unit at Moreton in Marsh.
Then he was posted to 40 Squadron in May based at Foggia Main in Italy, flying Wellington bombers.
