From How We Served
The final resting place for; - 1971 & V211714 Private Frank Funston of Aspendale and Moorabbin, Victoria, who prior to his enlistment for War Service on the 12th of July 1915, had been employed as a blacksmith.
Frank was allocated to reinforcements for the 8th Light Horse Regiment 1st AIF and was embarked for Egypt and further training on the 27th of January 1916.
Having arrived in Egypt, Frank was taken on strength with the 3rd Training Reserve Regiment on the 6th of March, and following being hospitalized for influenza he was transferred to the 4th Division Artillery Column on the 1st of April.
On the 23rd of May, Frank was again transferred, and was taken on strength with the 12th Field Artillery Brigade, with which he was shipped to France with, arriving on the 13th of June. Following service in the field in Northern France, Frank was transferred to the 39th Battery of the 10th Field Artillery Brigade.
Frank’s service in the field would be continuous until he was evacuated sick and was admitted into the 53rd General Hospital on the 8th of March 1918. Having recovered, Frank was sent to the 5th Rest Camp, and then on to the Australian General Base Depot at Rouelles on the 31st of March.
By the 31st of May, Frank had re-joined his Unit, and was temporarily detached for service with the 4th Division Artillery Column. Frank was granted Leave to England on the 8th of October, and following his return to his Unit in Northern France, he was returned to England for service with Administrative Headquarters on the 3rd of December.
Whilst still in England, Frank was detached to duty with the Overseas Training Brigade, but was again hospitalized for illness on the 8th of January 1919.
With the War now over, Frank was diagnosed as suffering from rheumatism, and began his repatriation back to Australia as an invalid, departing England on the 23rd of March. Following his disembarkation in Australia, Frank received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 30th of June 1919.
With the outbreak of a Second World War, Frank again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces on the 10th of March 1942, and was allocated to the Australian Army Ordnance Corps for full time duty within Australia.
Whilst serving with the 2nd Australian Base Ordinance Depot Frank was hospitalized for accidental injuries, and succumbed to these on the 3rd of November 1943. He was aged 52.
Following his premature passing whilst serving with the Australian Military Forces, Private Frank Funston, a veteran of the ‘Great War’, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
