The final resting place for; - V5773 & 5177 Sergeant Peter Hansen of Wedderburn, Victoria who prior to enlisting for War Service on the 26th of December 1914 had been engaged in farming, and employed as a butcher.
Taken on strength with the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Train 1st AIF, Peter embarked for Egypt and further training on the 7th of February 1915, and having arrived officially joined his Unit. Peter was sent to Gallipoli, where he landed on the 13th of November and remained on the Peninsular for the final phase of the campaign, before returning to Egypt on the 1st of January 1916.
By the 29th of July 1916, Peter had transferred to the 9th Light Horse Regiment, and his service during the desert campaigning would be continuous, before he was again transferred, having been taken on strength with the ANZAC Mounted Division Train on the 6th of September 1917.
Shortly after his arrival, Peter was promoted to Company Sergeant Major on the 23rd of September, and over the rest of the desert campaign he would been seen as having set a high standard in his duties, with him being ‘Mentioned in Despatches’ for his services during operations in the Jordan Valley between the 30th of April to the 22nd of August 1918.
With the end of the First World War, Peter began his repatriation back to Australia, departing on the 15th of June 1919, and following his return he received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 23rd of September 1919.
With the outbreak of a Second World War, Peter again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces, when he enlisted on the 29th of August 1940, and was accepted for full time duties within Australia.
Allocated to the Australian Army Service Corps, Peter’ service would be continuous, and whilst on strength with the Headquarters Victoria Lines of Communication (Labor Service) 6th Heavy Transport Company he was evacuated for hospitalization due to sickness.
Whilst still being hospitalized, Peter succumbed to illness on the 4th of May 1943. He was aged 59.
Following his premature death, whilst again serving in the Australian Military Forces, ‘Great War’ veteran Sergeant Peter Hansen, who had chosen to serve during a second world conflict, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
