His role in the Z Special Forces was captured in the film The Highest honour also known as Heroes of the Krait, 1982, directed by John McLean.
"...NX140476 Lance Corporal John Thomas Hardy, Z Special Unit, of Narrabri, NSW. L/Cpl Hardy enlisted in the Citizens Military Force (N255751) in Darwin in November 1941. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 1 September 1942. Nine days later he transferred to the AIF and began extensive specialised training as a member of Z Special Unit. L/Cpl Hardy's unit left Australia in September 1944 to engage in operations to sink enemy ships in Singapore Harbour. In December 1944 L/Cpl Hardy and others were captured by the Japanese. They were executed in Singapore on 7 July 1945. He was 24 years of age." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
