LAC Irvine 76974 was killed at his guard post in hand to hand fighting during an enemy attack on at Tarakan, Borneo
He was a member of Number 2 Aerodrome Defence Squadron / 2 Airfield Defence Squadron - a Rifle Company was attached to Number 61 Airfield Construction Wing at Tarakan.
On the 4th of May 1945 a small group of Japanese soldiers was detected trying to infiltrate the squadron lines and in the ensuing action all the Japanese were killed, but unfortunately LAC Irvine was also killed.
The LAC (Thomas) Irvine trophy is an award for RAAF Airfield Defence Guards in honour of the first member of Number 2 Aerodrome Defence Squadron to be killed in action.
