George Norman Mackie was born in 1895 in Prospect Hill, South Australia. He is the son of George William Mackie and Elizabeth Julia (Marschan) Mackie, Husband of Catherine Olive Agnes (Duck) Mackie. His collection consists of seventy-five letters written by W/O Mackie to family members in Australia, and a diary kept by W/O Mackie between 16 August 1915 and 9 June 1916. He enlisted on 20 May 1915, Keswick S.A and his Unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board RMS Morea on 26 August 1915 as a warrant officer.

He was moved from 27th Australian Infantry Battalion to 7th Australian Infantry Brigade on 19/8/16. Norman was sick and admitted in hospital on 1/10/16, Belgium and discharged back to duty on 3/10/16. He was also Wounded in 1918 in the 7th Infantry Brigade Headquarters but did not die during the war. He died on 11 March 1967 and was buried in Cobbitty St Pauls Cemetery. His war service included locations Egypt, Gallipoli and Western Front. He received a Meritorious Service Medal for his service and 2 mention in despatches award.
