Flying Officer Percy Thomas Jeffery 205655 (Wireless Operator / Observer) and Flying Officer Frederick Arthur Mitchell 416359 (Pilot) of Number 5 Squadron were killed when Wirraway A20-513 crashed in the Tolga area, far north Queensland while on a familiarisation flight.
An eye-witness stated "...the engine cut-out, the aircraft wobbled several times and then spun to earth."
Army Padre Hall from the 2/6th Australian General Hospital at Rocky Creek conducted their funeral Service.
Percy Jeffrey enlisted in the RAAF in September 1935 as an airman Wireless Telegraphist / Operator
He later remustered to Air Gunner / Air Observer and was posted to Number 21 Squadron in Singapore
He returned to Australia in March 1942 and was posted to Number 5 Squadron where he was commissioned in October 1942
