Son of Eliot Powell Johnson and Linda May Johnson, of Manly.
On 18 March 1943 while on a training jump from a Dakota aircraft, his parachute became tangled with the aircraft tail. The pilot attempted multiple manoeuvres to release the chute unsuccessfully. They made their way to the Mulwala Dam where Eric was able to release his harness and fall into the dam. Private Johnson's body was recovered three days later, the cause of death was determined as drowning.
