Pilot Officer William John LEWIS was the Flight Engineer of Lancaster tail number LL891 C/S JO-E of No. 463 Squadron RAAF based at Waddington in Lincolnshire.
Very few RAAF aircrew qualified as Flight Engineers and William's service number siggested he was probably initially a groundcrewman, probably an engine fitter / mechanic who subsequently changed over to aircrew and was subsequently commissioned.
He was killed in action in the course of a night bombing raid on the French city and major rail junction of Lille, in northern France, on the night of 10/11 May 1944. He was 32 years old at the time of his death. There were no survivors from their aircraft.
