Ventura JT836 of 459 Squadron RAAF took off from Nicosia airfield on Cyprus on a bombing mission against the German airfield at Calato (Kalathos) on the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese region
No trace of the aircraft was discovered following take-off; all of the crew were officially listed as killed in action and as their bodies were not recovered they are commemorated on the Alamein Memorial in Egypt
