Darrel was the fourth of five children of Edward Eustace Manning (born 1886 in Perth, WA) and Kate Hogarth Baker (born 1884 in Hobart, Tasmania). Eustace and Kate married in Perth, WA in 1909 in Perth, WA where Eustace was a Dairyman.
Darrel was raised in Victoria Park in South Perth, WA where his father was working as a Stock Agent before moving to Jandacott and farming. Darrel was living in Cannington, WA and working as an SEC Linesman when he enlisted in the RAN in 1939. He served initially on HMAS Cerberus V as an Ordinary Seaman (Service No: F2731/20), then served on the Leeuwin, Kattabul and Perth. Darrel was an Able Seaman on HMAS Perth when she and the corvette HMAS Armidale were torpedoed and sunk by Japanese destroyers at the Battle of Sunda Strait. Darrel was one of the 353 of 681 on board HMAS Perth who were killed - Darrel is Missing in Action - presumed killed (The West Australian Tues 26, 1946, p 7).
