SOLDIER S DEATH
BODY FOUND IN
RIVER
While loading river gravel from the bank of the Macquarie River at Dubbo at a spot known as the Devil's Hole' early on Saturday morning, a man saw an object floating down the river which resembled a human body. He went to the nearby residence of Mr. Samuels, who notified the police station. A search of the river was started in the vicinity of where the body was seen.
About 10.30 a.m. Mr. Clarrie Friend, who is employed by Mr. A. K. K. Scott, on his property on the western side of the river some distance down from the 'Devil's Hole,' noticed the body in the water near the bank. He immediately notified the police. The body, clothed in the uniform of a private of the A.I.F., was taken to the morgue, where it was later identified as that of William Henry Cox Marcroft (24), a member of the A.I.F. attached to the Dubbo Military Camp.
Deceased was a native of Gunnedah, where his parents reside. After viewing the body at the morgue, the deputy-coroner (Mr. I. B. MacKenzie) ordered a post-mortem.
Marcroft was buried with full military honours on Sunday afternoon in the Dubbo cemetery.
