From How We Served
The final resting place for; - 149 and V9037 Major Walter Harold Mason of Bunniyong and Queenscliff, Victoria who had been employed as a musician, and was serving with the Royal Artillery Garrison Artillery, when he sort enlistment with the 1st AIF on the 4th of June 1915.
Allocated to the Siege Artillery 1st AIF, Walter departed Australia on the 17th of July, and eventually arrived in France on the 27th of February 1916, following his arrival, Walter was officially taken on strength with the 36th Siege Artillery Brigade on the 13th of September.
Aside brief periods of sickness, Walter remained on duty in France and Belgium, before receiving a respite of leave to England on the 6th of August 1917, and returning to his Unit on the 19th of August. By the end of November, Walter had been returned to England to attend a course of Instruction in Ordnance at the Royal Ordnance Depot, Woolwich, arriving from France on the 30th of November.
Following the completion of this course of instructions, Walter was returned to France, and re-joined his Unit on the 14th of February 1918. On the 12th of March, Walter was transferred to the Australian Army Ordnance Corps, and remained on duty in France until after War’s end.
Walter arrived back in England on the 23rd of November 1918, and was retained on duty until he began his repatriation back to Australia, arriving back in Melbourne, Victoria on the 25th of July 1919.
Following his return, Walter received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 23rd of September 1919.
With the onset of a second World War, Walter again sort service with the Australian Military Forces on the 26th of October 1940, and was taken on strength with the Australian Army Ordinance Corps.
Appointed as a Major, Walter was serving with the 3rd Ammunition Depot at the time of his premature death on the 16th of December 1944, at the age of 58.
Following his passing Major Walter Mason, a veteran a two War veteran, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
