A review of Corporal Wilfred McCulloch’s art exhibition.

“McCulloch's show at the Athenaeum is also of interest. I was very surprised to see how he had "come on." He has a grip of his materials now, and some confidence in using them. Some
river stuff on the Yarra is excellent, late autumn being the time of the year. Some camp sketches are good -"Trench-digging" particularly. He has found a colour and tone sense now. He confessed to me at his show that the "Van Goghs" and the "Matisses" had led him out of "the straight and narrow." Moreover, McCulloch draws very well, and studies of soldiers, portraits, and other odds and ends are all good to see.

Brigadier D. A. Luxton, introduced by Capt. W. Pook, will open the show on Wednesday, and I sincerely recommend to any lucky Melbourne Cup investors the advisability of commemorating their luck by acquiring a work of art at either of these shows. All bookmakers will agree, I think. November 15 is the closing date for both shows.”
