Flying Officer Arthur Sampson McEvoy served with the RAAF 456 Squadron, based in England.
He served in the war of Europe for several years, until 456 Squadron was disbanded 15 Jun 1945.
Upon his return to Australia, he was transferred to the RAAF 5 Operational Training Unit, based at Williamtown, NSW, as a flying instuctor.
Shortly after joining the unit, on the morning of 19 Sept 1945, he took off in aircraft Mosquito A52-86 with Aircraftman 1 Arthur Waldron, for gunnery practice at Cemetery Point gunnery range.
On completion of the exercise, Arthur Sampson McEvoy flew low over the Quadrant Hut. Unfortunately, he was too low and the tailplane of the aircraft struck a radio mast near the hut. The impact caused the aircraft to lose the starboard elevator. Immediately after striking the mast, the aircraft climbed to about 370mtrs (1200ft), then fell out of control into the sea. This was about 460mtrs (1500ft) from the Quadrant. Upon striking the water, the aircraft broke up and burned.
The body of Arthur Sampson McEvoy was later found on a beach approximately 16klms (10 miles), from the crash site. Arthur Raymond Waldron's body was never recovered.
